Bakery School South-Africa
In February 2019 the Bakery School South-Africa opened its doors to 25 students, in partnership with the Masisebenzi Secondary School.
Tembisa, an Nguni name meaning Promise or Hope, is a large township situated to the north of Kempton Park on the East Rand, Gauteng, South Africa.
It was established in 1957 when black South Africans were resettled from Alexandra and other areas in Edenvale, Kempton Park, Midrand and Germiston. According to Statistics SA, there are over 463.000 people living in Tembisa. It is the second largest township in South-Africa.
Our aim with the Bakery School Foundation is to support children from a township like Tembisa, to groom them, provide them with baking skills and empower them to be successful in life so to inspire other upcoming generation in the township.
Nigel Philips, General Manager Chipkins Puratos: “In South Africa we are proud to have embarked on the bakery school project which allows us to help young people who come from an under privileged background get a great platform for a successful career in our industry. There is a significant skill shortage in the country and the bakery school allows us to contribute to addressing this challenge for the industry”
Since the start of the Bakery School South-Africa in 2019, 72 students graduated. 10 students have been employed by PuratosChipkins. The other students were offered a first job at one of our customers.
